10 orthopedic firsts in 2022

From smart knee debuts to a new hand surgery procedure, here are 10 notable orthopedic surgery milestones so far in 2022:

  1. Nick Moore, MD, performed the first minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided trigger finger release in Michigan. The procedure also  debuted in Wyoming at Casper-based McGinley Clinic.
  2. Ran Schwarzkopf, MD, of New York City-based NYU Langone Health, completed the first case with Smith+Nephew’s Journey II medial dished knee replacement system.
  3. Three orthopedic surgeons   debuted  Exactech’s Newton Knee implant for total joint replacements.
  4. Daniel Jones, MD,  completed  the first knee replacement with the Persona IQ smart implant in Florida. Jacob Sams, MD,  debuted  the same technology in Illinois, and Brian Larkin, MD,  debuted  it in Colorado.
  5. Cyna Khalily, MD, an orthopedic surgeon in Louisville, Ky.,  completed  the first robot-assisted surgery with Smith+Nephew’s Legion Conceloc cementless total knee system.
  6. Brian Rebolledo, MD, of Scripps Clinic in San Diego,  became  the first surgeon in Southern California to use a mixed reality headset for shoulder replacements.
  7. Smith+Nephew’s Ri.Hip Modeler and Ri.Hip Navigation tools for hip replacements  debuted  at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham, N.C.

Published results showed patients who underwent patellofemoral arthroplasty experienced low 30-day readmission and reoperation rates, with older age and elevated BMI identified as risk factors for adverse perioperative outcomes.

Discharge to institution-owned skilled nursing facility after TJA shorter length of stay

“As health care accountability and cost awareness increase, we are expected to continue to improve the quality of care we deliver to our patients while working with a different bundle of payment models,” Ran Schwarzkopf, MD, of the NY Langone Hospital for Join Diseases, New York, told Healio.com/Orthopedics. “Even though the utilization of skilled nursing facilities has decreased among total joint replacement patients, we still send a subset of our patients to these facilities.”

    Hip Society Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship

    The Hip Society Fellowship and Research Fund was primarily established, in late 2011 – early 2012, to support The Hip Society Rothman-Ranawat Traveling Fellowship. This annual fellowship is open to four (4) young orthopaedic surgeons from North America and throughout the world. The traveling Fellows visit up to twelve (12) sites in North America within a period of approximately four (4) weeks, starting on Specialty Day (at the AAOS Annual Meeting). The North American hosting sites are identified by The Hip Society’s Fellowship and Mentorship Committee, and hosted by The Hip Society’s members.

    The goal of the Fellowship is to foster emerging thought- leaders and to provide them with an inspirational tour of state- of-the-art facilities offering exemplary surgical care of the hip joint throughout North America.
